This past weekend, 1220 Exhibits participated in The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life helping to raise over $77,000 for cancer research. Throughout the month of April, 1220 had been hosting several fundraisers including a pie in the face contest that I was the lucky winner to pie Matt, the President, in the face. Some people think my Assistant rigged it and she swears she didn’t but it was hilarious to say the least. I might have rubbed the whipped cream in real good on his face! Other fundraisers included a percentage night at a local restaurant and a fun clothes week where employees got to wear jeans, their college colors, hats and shorts. We capped off the month with a company lunch bringing everyone together to celebrate our accomplishments and spend time with one another as a company for an hour. This is one of the things I most like doing because I don’t think we can say enough good things about the work we are doing. We have some great projects in the shop right now and are about to open a few museums that are truly spectacular. The clients are very pleased and we can’t wait to show them off.
Relay for Life kicked off the next day at 11am and went until 11pm. We had some great giveaway prizes and employees brought their kids and dogs to play. It was the first warm day where the rain stayed away and it looked like everyone enjoyed themselves. There was music, interactive activities and contests including donut eating, balloon tosses and a Cheeto toss where one person has whipped cream on their face and the other tosses Cheetos onto the whipped cream. Seriously, who comes up with this?
In all seriousness, it was a great reminder of how far cancer research has progressed and a rallying call to continue to push to find a cure for this disease. The Luminaria ceremony had people tell their personal stories with loved ones battling cancer and a slideshow of people that had fought and either won or lost their battle. The pedestrian bridge was lined with Luminaria bags with those names and it was humbling to see so many names including those of our own. This is why 1220 joined the fight against cancer. To fight for our people and their families. There are no words for when a son or daughter is lost but we hope to one day not let another family know that pain. We will end cancer, together.
