For 1220 Exhibits Lead Installer Keith Gay, that process is what keeps the work exciting.

“It’s never the same job,” Keith shared. “You never get bored.”

After spending six months in Montgomery, Alabama, leading installation efforts at the Alabama Department of Archives and History, Keith sat down with us to reflect on his experience, his career with 1220, and what it truly takes to be a lead installer in the museum and exhibit industry.

Keith is no stranger to 1220. Over the years, he has returned to the company multiple times, contributing to some of our most notable and impactful projects, including the Eisenhower Foundation at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library & Museum. His experience spans decades of hands-on exhibit installation work, and his reputation for problem-solving, craftsmanship, and leadership has made him an invaluable part of our field team.

The role of a lead installer goes far beyond simply assembling exhibit components. Installers are responsible for understanding every detail of a project — from graphics and casework to lighting, artifact placement, and overall visitor experience. They are often tasked with troubleshooting challenges in real time, adapting to unexpected conditions on-site, and ensuring that every detail meets the highest standards before opening day.

That level of responsibility requires patience, flexibility, and an incredible amount of commitment.

“Museums are a lot more than just installing and then walking away,” Keith said. “It’s part of me whenever I leave one.”

That mindset became especially evident during the Alabama Department of Archives and History project. While installation crews rotated between projects or returned to the shop as schedules shifted, Keith remained on-site in Montgomery for the full six months to ensure the project was completed to 1220 standards. Long-term installs require a different level of endurance not just physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. Being away from home for extended periods becomes part of the job, and installers often spend months living out of hotels while balancing demanding schedules and tight deadlines.

But for Keith, the reward is seeing the lasting impact of the work.

“You look at it as something generations will see,” he said. “Kids growing up will take their kids.”

That perspective is one shared by many museum professionals, but installers experience it in a uniquely personal way. They spend months immersed in the physical details of a space, watching empty rooms slowly transform into meaningful environments that will educate and inspire visitors for years to come. Every graphic placement, every mounted artifact, every adjusted light contributes to the final experience.

It is work that often happens behind the scenes, but it is essential to the success of every project.
