The newly opened Captain Larry L. Taylor exhibit at the Coolidge National Medal of Honor Heritage Center honors the extraordinary heroism of a local Vietnam War veteran and Medal of Honor recipient. Captain Larry L. Taylor, a U.S. Army helicopter pilot who executed a daring rescue on June 18, 1968, piloting his AH-1G Cobra gunship into hostile territory to save a four-man reconnaissance team that was surrounded by enemy combatants.
To bring this heroic story to life, the exhibit features immersive displays, historical artifacts, and a full-sized replica of Captain Taylor’s AH-1G Cobra helicopter—expertly fabricated by 1220’s scenic department. Our team meticulously crafted the full-scale replica using archival imagery and detailed reference materials to ensure historical accuracy. To fully immerse visitors in the environment of a combat mission, 1220 integrated accent lighting and coordinated with other contractors on video and lighting integration.
In addition to the helicopter, 1220 designed and fabricated numerous key elements that enhance the visitor experience. Integrated display cases were built with embedded lighting and graphic-clad back panels, while dimensional lettering and reader rails were added to guide guests through the narrative in a tactile way. A push button mounted on the reader rail allows visitors to activate an interactive sequence: first triggering a monitor video, then synchronized sound effects, followed by a large projector LED screen display, creating an engaging, layered multimedia experience. This feature transforms the exhibit, placing visitors at the center of the story.
