An incredible addition to the bustling Music City, USA, The National Museum of African American Music (NMAAM) is a testament to the capabilities of 1220. The 21,500 sq. ft. space is an immersive experience in African American music told through re-imagined exhibit casework, a plethora of graphic imagery and sensory stimuli that encourage listening, singing, dancing and engaging with exhibit content.
Six unique galleries challenged our team with multiple styles, textures, color palettes and AV integrations. Thirteen-foot multidimensional walls create a prismatic effect and required precise pixel mapping geometry to avoid distortion on textured, curved or multi-level planes. Multiple theater and virtual reality interactives encourage visitors to become a part of the music, with over 30 touchscreen tables optimized with RFID technology, to allow for takeaway experiences.
The space’s unique floorplan is heightened by the unconventional arrangement of large-scale graphic and textural diversity. Scenic artists recreated surfaces including hyper-realistic brick, mixed wood finished, distressed metals and custom flooring. Elevations included over 50 custom cases, over 400 graphics, backlit chroma panels, video panels, illuminated accents and wallpaper graphics with inlaid casework were featured throughout the museum’s galleries. NMAAM continues to educate and entertain visitors on the depth and impact of African American Music.
